Inside the scientific research about Roman Modena the study of wall-paintings has never had, until 2017, a leading position, due to a very fragmentary material evidence and a small number of key-finds. In 2017 the University of Bologna (Picta fragmenta Programme) and Modena’s Musei Civici, in partnership with the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti Paesaggio di Bologna, Modena, Reggio Emilia e Ferrara and the University of Reggio Emilia, decided to share an interdisciplinary study project dedicated to the systematic review all the remains of Roman wall painting found in Modena from the nineteenth century to today. The integrated approach made possible to outline a picture of the economy of painting between the end of 2nd century BC and the end of 2nd century AD, as well as its: high quality formal choices (themes, schemes, motifs) and technical solutions (pigments, tectoria); elegant decorative culture; clients of refined taste and good spending capacity.
