In 1856, the famous archaeologist and historian Alexey Sergeevich Uvarov addressed the members of the Academy of Sciences with an unusual proposal: he wanted to honor the memory of my recently deceased father, former Minister of Public Education S.S. Uvarov, establishing a special prize, which was to be awarded annually on behalf of the Academy awards for the best play and for the best historical research. Considerable Uvarov promised to allocate the funds allocated to the winners himself. The academicians gratefully accepted the offer of the patron of arts and the establishment won the first literary prize in Russia.
