Even though written messages are often regarded as being equivalents of, or rather substitutes for conventional intertitles, there is an important difference between both: lettres, notes, newspaper articles etc., on top of conveying narrative information to the viewer, can also function as material objects within the diegetic world. After an analysis of the fundamental differences between intertitles and written messages, the authors discuss several examples from different film genres in order to show in what ways the latter can be used as specific and powerful narrative devices.
