This essay is the result of a research conducted starting from eleven titles produced by the Comitati Civici (Civic Committees) between 1948 and 1959, as well as from the in-depth study of one example in particular: L’Italia è la mia patria [Italy is my country] (1953). These are films of different lengths which all inject, albeit in different proportions, narrative elements into a propaganda discourse based not always – and not only – on documentary or archive images, which today we would define as non-fiction. In terms of form, they represent at the same time a sort of summa of what was previously produced in the field of propaganda and political communication, demonstrating that the fruits have been firmly hoarded, as well as the acquisition of new awareness of the potential of (audio)visual language.
