Abstract

Today, providers of intermediary services, including online platforms, make ample resort to artificial intelligence for the purpose of content moderation. Although automated moderation systems have proven to be highly effective, they can have a rather significant human rights impact, affecting in particular the freedom of expression and the right to non-discrimination, as well as, to a certain extent, the rights to privacy and data protection. The present chapter offers an insight into the main challenges arising in this context, focusing most notably on the Digital Services Act and, particularly, the main obligations that providers of intermediary services are required to comply with to the reduce the effects of AI-driven content moderation.
