The term 'luxury student residence' (or student hotel) refers to private hotel facilities aimed at a young, dynamic, student clientele, willing to pay a higher price for a room than the rental market. In Florence, a city where public accommodation for students is scarce, and where, on the other hand, short tourist rentals abound, driving residents away from the most desirable areas (not only the central ones), there is an unstoppable rise in the price of rent that prevents many students from embarking on university studies. Some new private student halls of residence are located in already public buildings that could have been used to meet social needs and the shortage of public housing. Through the voices of scholars, researchers, activists, and trade unionists, the book delves into the scenario of impoverishment of public spaces and social selection brought about by urban planning and political choices that have favoured the establishment of large real estate and hotel corporations.

Abstract
The term 'luxury student residence' (or student hotel) refers to private hotel facilities aimed at a young, dynamic, student clientele, willing to pay a higher price for a room than the rental market. In Florence, a city where public accommodation for students is scarce, and where, on the other hand, short tourist rentals abound, driving residents away from the most desirable areas (not only the central ones), there is an unstoppable rise in the price of rent that prevents many students from embarking on university studies. Some new private student halls of residence are located in already public buildings that could have been used to meet social needs and the shortage of public housing. Through the voices of scholars, researchers, activists, and trade unionists, the book delves into the scenario of impoverishment of public spaces and social selection brought about by urban planning and political choices that have favoured the establishment of large real estate and hotel corporations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
