This contribution originates from a seminar devoted to the meaning philosophical investigations can currently have. Why is philosophy relevant nowadays? On what grounds, with what methods and goals is philosophical reflection worth it at the beginning of the third millennium? Sketching a process which is both autobiographic and related to recent developments in, more specifically, philosophy of science, I will outline some of the reasons why philosophical tools can prove crucial in understanding the present. Special attention will be devoted to the intertwinement between philosophy, scientific knowledge, and society – an intertwinement which makes the meaning and impact of philosophy of science relevant both from a theoretical point of view and beyond it.
