The essay shows how the typographic art of Giambattista Bodoni can teach us a lesson not only about the 18th century and its theories of genius and art, but also about aesthetics in general: in particular, the formation of an artistic genre, since Bodoni was able to give typographic practice the status of an art in the strict sense.
