Rather than focusing on the common themes, the evidence and documents of mutual influence, and the patterns of cultural migration and its main protagonists, this essay aims to examine certain clear difficulties that arose between Italy and Britain in the mutual understanding of their respective aesthetic theories and the way in which they were received in both countries. It also attempts to show that, in some cases, the dialogue between the two cultures was lively and fruitful, despite the diversity that tended to inhibit such dialogue. The essay focuses on the divergences in aesthetic and critical theory that can be seen as a consequence of different philosophical options: namely, the Italian suspicion of British empiricist doctrines.

Abstract
Rather than focusing on the common themes, the evidence and documents of mutual influence, and the patterns of cultural migration and its main protagonists, this essay aims to examine certain clear difficulties that arose between Italy and Britain in the mutual understanding of their respective aesthetic theories and the way in which they were received in both countries. It also attempts to show that, in some cases, the dialogue between the two cultures was lively and fruitful, despite the diversity that tended to inhibit such dialogue. The essay focuses on the divergences in aesthetic and critical theory that can be seen as a consequence of different philosophical options: namely, the Italian suspicion of British empiricist doctrines.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
