This volume explores the relationship between the journey to Italy and the aesthetic theories later developed by three eminent eighteenth-century European philosophers - Joseph Addison, Lod Shaftesbury and George Berkeley. The volume takes as its starting point the responsiveness of their travels to the aspirations of the age. The three philosophers were in fact searching in Mediterranean culture and art, with particular attention to antiquity, the sources of Western civilisation.
