Only in the last phase of the research did stratigraphic excavations begin, which were also documented with laser scanner methodology. These excavations also led to new discoveries. In fact, it was possible to reconstruct the previous blocks from the Samnite period that had been destroyed in order to extend the dwelling of the later period, which in turn were built from earlier structures dating back to the Archaic period. The discovery of walls built with pappamonte blocks, typical of buildings from this remote period, associated with finds and layers still intact, has made it possible to attest for the first time the presence of archaic buildings in this area of Pompeii.

Abstract

The research project of the University of Bologna in the house of Obellio Firmo in Pompeii develops innovative lines of research based on the experimentation of methodologies typical of preventive archaeology (such as geophysics and laser scanning). It is, in fact, a project born as a development of the previous experience gained by the multidisciplinary team of the University of Bologna, coordinated in the field by the authors, within the framework of the Pompeii Knowledge Plan in 2015. On that occasion, innovative methodologies were developed to document the north-eastern side of the ancient city. In light of that experience, a new project was started with the aim of further developing the experimentation in a context that offered the right potential. The House of Obellio Firmo, one of the largest and most architecturally developed houses with a large open garden, presented the right features to experiment with new methods of 3D topographic documentation based on laser scanning and georadar prospecting. In this way, it was possible to develop a database linked to the 3D survey of the architecture (laser scanning) and the 3D reconstruction of the anomalies buried above all inside the garden, but also in all the other rooms of the house.
