Since the first descriptions of spatial waves in the eighteenth century to the first use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in the 1900s the quality of ultrasound images and the possibility of their application had wildly increased. The first use of rectal endosonography dates back to 1956 and nowadays it is a common and largely used study method evaluation of anal abscess, anal fistula, staging of rectal tumors, and analysis of perineal structures in adult patients. In 1994 Dutch study group of Benninga first described the use of anal endosonography in children; since then the knowledge about the normal and pathological echo-structure of children’s anorectum has constantly increased and today several centers have begun to use these methodics for clinical assessment of pediatric population.

Abstract
Since the first descriptions of spatial waves in the eighteenth century to the first use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in the 1900s the quality of ultrasound images and the possibility of their application had wildly increased. The first use of rectal endosonography dates back to 1956 and nowadays it is a common and largely used study method evaluation of anal abscess, anal fistula, staging of rectal tumors, and analysis of perineal structures in adult patients. In 1994 Dutch study group of Benninga first described the use of anal endosonography in children; since then the knowledge about the normal and pathological echo-structure of children’s anorectum has constantly increased and today several centers have begun to use these methodics for clinical assessment of pediatric population.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
