Italian-Libyan relations fed an axis of Mediterranean history through different historical eras, from liberal and later fascist colonialism, up to the IIWW turning point. Once the colonial page closed, Italy and Libya were able to build an economic interdependence on democratic bases which produced stabilizing effects in the Mediterranean and in the Euro-Arab dialogue. The Italian-Libyan special relationship has been capable to resist Cold War interferences and the tensions between Washington and Tripoli in Gaddafi's years, up to the dramatic political fragmentation of Libya, which eventually caused the Mediterranean downsizing of Italy and regional instability. The volume aims at providing a first long-term study in English on this subject.
