The papers collected together in this special issue were originally presented at the conference of the European Network of Early Childhood music educators and researchers (Eunet MERYC) held at the University of Bologna, Italy in the summer of 2009. The aims of Eunet MERYC are to inform members of the network about the current situation of early childhood music education and research in different countries across Europe, to provide a forum for discussion, reflection and research and to further the development of early childhood music education practice and research by fostering collaboration between European music educators and researchers. The biennial conference supports these aims.
