Relying on archival sources, this chapter presents the hidden story of unofficial contacts between the European Economic Community and the Soviet Union in the early 1970s, despite the Moscow's policy of non-recognition. It explores and explains the conditions that prompted these contacts, as well as the rationales and the objectives on both sides.
