Tribunale umano e tribunale celeste: Procedure della giustizia nelle sacre rappresentazioni fiorentine

The Florentine religious plays (sacre rappresentazioni) have been defined a type of «preaching in form of theatre». This essay underlines the intrinsic link between this type of theatre, preaching and the contemporary discussion on the procedures of justice in its twofold dimension of wordily and eternal justice. By analyzing several sacre rappresentazioni of the second part of the fifteenth century, this contribution highlights the way these plays conveyed a vision of justice and of its mechanisms through exemplary scenes of either condemnation or absolution. These plays were connected on the one hand with the Florentine historical context and, on the other hand, with the theological theme of the divine justice and the salvation of the soul. Through the construction of a dynamic and dramatic mise-en-scene – which was solemn and emotionally moving –, the sacre rappresentazioni showed both the cruelest side of the human justice and the invisible mechanisms of God’s court of law. In this way, these plays actively contributed to the religious imagery formation, to the elaboration of a political discourse, and to the consolidation of the meaning of justice in its concrete aspects and in its final horizons. In particular, the representation of the heavenly tribunal points out that preaching was considered an essential element in the “procedures” of God’s justice. Therefore, on the stage the constitutive relationship between verbum et ius was presented in a new form.

Le sacre rappresentazioni fiorentine sono state giustamente definite una «predicazione in forma di teatro». Il presente contributo evidenzia il nesso intrinseco tra questo teatro, la predicazione e la contemporanea riflessione sulle procedure della giustizia, nel suo duplice volto di giustizia terrena ed eterna. Analizzando alcune sacre rappresentazioni del secondo Quattrocento, il saggio mette in luce in che modo questi testi veicolassero una visione della giustizia e dei suoi processi, con scene esemplari di condanna o assoluzione, legate da un lato al contesto storico fiorentino e dall’altro al tema teologico della giustizia di Dio e della salvezza dell’anima. Attraverso la costruzione di una visione dinamica e drammatica, solenne e di forte impatto emotivo, le sacre rappresentazioni mostravano sia gli aspetti più crudi della giustizia umana sia le invisibili dinamiche del tribunale di Dio. In questa maniera, esse contribuirono attivamente alla formazione dell’immaginario religioso, all’elaborazione del discorso politico, al consolidamento del significato della giustizia nei suoi risvolti concreti e nel suo orizzonte ultimo. In particolare, la messa in scena del tribunale celeste evidenzia come la predicazione fosse considerata parte fondamentale nelle “procedure” della giustizia di Dio, declinando così sul palcoscenico in forma nuova il rapporto costitutivo tra verbum et ius.
