The analysis of the blood libel and the related Histoire prodigieuse et esmerueillable d’une sinagogue de iuifs (1609) and of related texts, Histoire très-pitoyable de deux pères Capucins qui ont esté cruellement martyrisés (1618) and Relación verdadera del Martirio que han padecido dos padres capuchinos por manos de una familia de judíos (1627) allows different hypotheses on the historical circumstances that gave rise to the constants and variations of the texts and the iconographic apparatus to be advanced. The study especially focuses into a variation : the placement of legendary ritual at Jewish Carnival (Purim) or on Jewish Passover, a detail that can shed light on the parodic inversion dynamics postulated by scholars, among others Cecil Roth, but on which available data are limited.
