Abstract

The late New Kingdom is a period in which innovation and monumental construction under the first kings of the Nineteenth Dynasty go hand in hand with notions of decline or collapse during the Twentieth Dynasty. During the reigns of Seti I and Ramesses II, some of the largest buildings in ancient Egypt were constructed. At the same time, Egypt was an integral component of the political and cultural systems of the Late Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East. From the late Nineteenth Dynasty onwards, these systems started to disintegrate, a process that led to the much-debated demise of the New Kingdom, one of the most fundamental watersheds in the history of pharaonic Egypt.
