The Greek novel Chereas and Callirhoe by Chariton attests that in the age of the Roman Empire the ideas of jealousy and envy were clearly distinct and corresponded to two Greek words. Nevertheless, we may assume that jealousy already had an important role in the plots of dramatic plays in the Classical age, and the Greek drama was a model for the Greek novel also in the emotional description of the characters.
