Within the debate about the claimed decline of university students’ writing skills, this volume explores the role of writing at the internationalised twenty-first century university, and the responsibilities of higher education for the development of multilingual and multiliterate student writers. The volume encourages a reconsideration of the actual opportunities to practise writing, both in the first and in a second language, offered by the Italian university system to its undergraduate student population, and a reassessment of the suitability of such opportunities for the needs of the new student cohorts.

Abstract

Within the debate about the claimed decline of university students’ writing skills, this volume explores the role of writing at the internationalised twenty-first century university, and the responsibilities of higher education for the development of multilingual and multiliterate student writers. The volume encourages a reconsideration of the actual opportunities to practise writing, both in the first and in a second language, offered by the Italian university system to its undergraduate student population, and a reassessment of the suitability of such opportunities for the needs of the new student cohorts.
