Study on the teachers' music knowledge have been based on different theories and methods, for example the theory of personal construct, the theories of professional role identity, the theory of social construction, discourse analysis and the theory of social representations. This Symposium deals with a comparison between three different approaches: discourse analysis, professional role identity theory and social representations theory. The aim is to show some examples of studies carried out in these fields, discuss the results and, in particular, to compare the different methods with respect to theoretical background, empirical data and what aspects of music teacher knowledge they give access to.
