This essay traces the events of the formation of the area of the old Navile market in Bologna, up to describing its current characteristics. All the knowledge and orientations for its future development are the basis of the Workshop organized within the framework of the Erasmus + Archea project, coordinated by the University of Bologna, in which ENSA Rouen participated with the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule of Aachen, the Politechnika Slaska of Gliwice and the University of Parma. At the heart of the Archea project is the open space of the medium-sized European city, recognized as a high quality space and considered as a resource to be conserved and developed consciously and as a model to enhance the habitability of the urban anthropic environment in the perspective of an overall sustainable development strategy. In this perspective Archea has developed a higher education program on the quality and design of open space that mixes online learning courses (REL-MOOC) and practical activities planned for physical mobility (Workshops in Bologna and Aachen).
