The chapter deals with the problems of the material conservation of concentration camps, with particular reference to the case of Fossoli. What motivated the work were the needs and obligations of remembrance, intimately connected to the needs and obligations required for the (material and immaterial) protection and conservation of a twentieth-century memorial site. After a brief introduction on different form of restoration work and valorization of these objects in Europe from the post-war period to today, the contribution describes the strategies used for the active conservation of the Fossoli/Carpi complex and ends with a critical ex-post analysis of the recently concluded consolidation actions.
