The Alan presence in Western Europe during the Great Migration of Nations is attested mainly by several place-names scattered in numerous countries, including Italy. In Italy place names that can be connected to the Alans are mostly located in the northern part of the peninsula, in correspondence with the main roads leading to the Alpine passes. For this reason, it can be assumed that many of these Alan settlements are connected to the presence of Alan troops enrolled by the Romans in defence of the peninsula and often stationed in villages where Sarmatian troops were previusly present. From this point of view, therefore, Alan place-names in Italy differ substantially from those of many other Western European countries

Abstract
The Alan presence in Western Europe during the Great Migration of Nations is attested mainly by several place-names scattered in numerous countries, including Italy. In Italy place names that can be connected to the Alans are mostly located in the northern part of the peninsula, in correspondence with the main roads leading to the Alpine passes. For this reason, it can be assumed that many of these Alan settlements are connected to the presence of Alan troops enrolled by the Romans in defence of the peninsula and often stationed in villages where Sarmatian troops were previusly present.
