Starting from the so-called "Hellenistic wreck" of Pisa (2nd century BC), the maritime transport of wild animals for circus performances in ancient times is analysed. The historical and economic circumstances of the capture of the animals, the types of ships used for transportation, the methods of loading, stowing and navigation are considered, through the analysis of Greek-Latin literary documentation and naval iconography.
