The paper deals with the historical tradition about the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians as the most important navigating peoples of the ancient world. The main nautical aspects presented by the ancient historical tradition (Greek and Roman) are examined, in order to verify how much is real and how much corresponds to a literary topos. Some modern studies referring to a more imagined than real tradition are also considered.
Il contributo è dedicato alla tradizione storica che fa di Fenici e Cartaginesi i più importanti popoli di navigatori del mondo antico. Vengono presi in esame i principali aspetti di ordine nautico presentati dalla tradizione storica antica (greca e romana), per verificare quanto vi sia di reale e quanto risponda, invece, a un topos letterario. Sono inoltre considerati alcuni studi moderni che fanno riferimento a una tradizione più immaginata che reale.
