For many centuries, from the early Middle Ages to the early decades of the 20th century, floating mills characterised the river landscapes of most of Europe, including Italy. They were large floating factories, similar to barges made up of one, two or three hulls, heavy barges permanently moored along the banks with their bows upstream, to operate the large paddle wheel that drove the millstones.
