Getting to know Italian libraries through travel literature and the Grand-Tour phenomenon: methods and results of a study

An analysis of the sources creates a journey within a journey, leading the way to a new, stimulating and interesting itinerary of study on the history of libraries as a study in cultural his- tory. An extraordinarily rich tapestry emerges showing with unequivocal clarity the recurring appeal of the Library as a pilgrimage destination, which in some cases is motivated by specific scholarly needs, while in others by a wide variety of reasons. Each traveller is responding to the call of curiosity and especially to the draw exerted by these institutions of cultural memo- ry as symbolic repositories of European culture.

L'analisi delle fonti crea un viaggio nel viaggio, aprendo la strada a un nuovo, stimolante e interessante itinerario di studio sulla storia delle biblioteche come studio di storia culturale. Emerge un arazzo straordinariamente ricco che mostra con chiarezza inequivocabile il richiamo ricorrente della Biblioteca come meta di pellegrinaggio, che in alcuni casi è motivata da specifiche esigenze accademiche, in altri da un'ampia varietà di ragioni. Ogni viaggiatore risponde al richiamo della curiosità e soprattutto al richiamo esercitato da queste istituzioni della memoria culturale come depositarie simboliche della cultura europea.
