Abstract

Rapidly increasing interest is devoted to the structure of ultrafine aerosol particles for the adverse health effects assocd. to it, as confirmed by a no. of epidemiol. studies. If regulations are generally in terms of particulate mass per unit vol., attention is also focused on particle counting per unit vol. and on particle morphol., which is made of fractal aggregates of elemental nanostructures as revealed by TEM anal. Here we present a TEM study on particles collected in an urban environment (Bologna, Northern Italy). The research has been carried out in two steps. First, samples were obsd. after collection on silica filters without any chem. treatment (Figure), and then the same samples were obsd. after soaking in different aq. solns. to mimic physiol. media. Evidence was obtained of a change in the nano-particle aggregation as a function of the medium.
