The letters of Thiatilde, abbess of Remiremont in the first decades of the 9th century, constitute a very fortunate case of survival of Carolingian female epistolary writing. The writing of the letters and then, at the beginning of the tenth century, their selection to form a small epistolary, and finally the deliberate erasure of the names of the addressees, are not only stages in the preservation of the letters themselves, but also reflect as many stages in the history and the construction of the identity of the monastic community to which Thiatilde belonged
