Established in the early eighth century, under the Umayyad caliph al-Walid (r. 705–15), the congregational mosque of Damascus was one of the most monumental places of prayer first built by Islam. The mosque, lavishly decorated with marble and wall mosaics, replaced an earlier church and became at the time of its construction the mosque of the capital of the Umayyad caliphate, an empire stretching from the Indus River to southern Spain.

Abstract
