The Marca Anconitana (1210–1798) was a region of the States of the Church (ca. 751–1870) approximately corresponding with the current Italian region of the Marches. Facing the Adriatic Sea on its eastern side, the region bordered south with the Kingdom of Naples at the height of the Tronto River and north with the Romagna region (with several modifications occurring along the centuries), while the Appennini Mountains were the natural border on the west. Given its geographical position and the geopolitical circumstances, during the early modern period the territory of the Marca was a frontier area confining through the Adriatic Sea with the Ottoman Empire. The contribution explores the Ottoman flag preserved in the city of Urbino, focusing on its iconography and on the trajectory of its transfer to the cathedral of the city.
