Which can be the reasons of a book on the countryside of the Vesuvian area in the Roman period? The article presents the background and the ambitions of the editorial project, born from the sinergy of two historical paths of research of the University of Bologna for the classical archaeology: on one side, the Roman countryside; on the other, the Vesuvian sites. Its aim is to demonstrate why the selected theme – housing in the countryside around Vesuvius – needs new attention and work, with an integrate approach, as the complexity of the sample requests.
