The literature up to July 2008 dealing with catalytic enantioselective FC alkylation of aromatic compounds with nitroalkenes has been reviewed. Both metal-mediated and organocatalysis have been employed leading to a vast array of enantiomerically pure compounds most of them of interest in medicinal chemistry. An insight into the mechanism of the various catalytic methodologies is provided aimed at providing a rationale for the reactions treated.
