Cellula is an unprecedented way of talking about theatre, an approach focused on the analysis of the creative process which brings artworks to fruition, by interweaving the voice and thought of a philosopher of theatre, Enrico Pitozzi, with that of an artist, Ermanna Montanari. Starting out by identifying central facets of the work of Teatro delle Albe, the company Montanari co-founded, the authors blend their imaginations without limiting the horizon of their reflections only to what takes place on stage, but opening their discourse to include philosophical and historical-artistic considerations that nourish theatrical composition. Cellula is a book in which photographic images drawn from forty years of experience dialogue among themselves and with the two collaborators’ words, gathered around specific themes such as the diaphanous, tactility, color, the vegetal, and geometry, each subject occupying a chapter. The volume opens with the words by Mariangela Gualtieri in the form of a letter addressed to the two authors. The English translation is by Thomas Simpson.
