Un esempio di mobilità verticale ad Ariminum: i Marci Vettii Valentes

In the 15th century near Porta S. Andrea in Rimini three inscriptions, probably engraved on statue bases and originally located in the forum, were found (CIL XI, 395; 421; 383). These epigraphs document the gradual social ascent, between the age of Claudius and that of Hadrian, of a family from Rimini, the Vettii Valentes, thanks to their active involvment in the Roman imperial military and bureaucratic apparatus. The first one who entered the equestrian order was the vir militaris Marcus Vettius Valens; the career of his namesake son or, more probably, grandson seems to have been circumscribed to the municipal sphere, whereas the son of the latter finally allowed the family to enter the senatorial order.

Nel XV secolo nei pressi di Porta S. Andrea a Rimini vennero alla luce tre iscrizioni (CIL XI, 395; 421; 383), verosimilmente pertinenti a basi di statue e in origine collocate nel foro, che documentano la progressiva ascesa sociale, tra l’epoca claudia e quella adrianea, della famiglia di origine riminese dei Vettii Valentes, grazie all’attiva partecipazione all’apparato militare e burocratico imperiale. Il primo ad accedere all’ordine equestre fu il vir militaris Marcus Vettius Valens; se la carriera del figlio, o più probabilmente, del nipote omonimo pare essere stata circoscritta all’ambito municipale, col figlio di quest’ultimo si ebbe infine l’ammissione della famiglia all’ordine senatorio.
