In 1927 engineer Mario Fossati presented the results of a study which – for the first time in Italy – concerned organisation of the industrial mass production of clothes. His research, commissioned by textile entrepreneur Giuseppe Rivetti, was carried out on the premises of Donato Levi e Figli in Turin with the aim of rationalising production processes on the basis of new theories about the scientific organisation of work. Fossati, founder of the Laboratory Institute for Scientific Organisation of Production in Turin, carried out time and motion studies on sewing and work processes, together with studies of workers’ behaviour.
