The Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) of the Department of Classics of Sapienza – University of Rome, directed by prof. Maria Vittoria Fontana and dr. Luca Colliva, aims to study the historical, linguistic and cultural development of the Kurdistan region throughout the historical period. From its beginning in 2011, as the heir of the activities of the Italian team led by prof. Carlo G. Cereti, who has been working in Iraqi Kurdistan since 2006, MAIKI started a productive collaboration with the local institutions committed to the study and safeguard of the region’s historical and archaeological heritage. MAIKI also collaborated with the Department of Antiquities, the High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR) and the three main archaeological museums of the region: the Slemani Museum, the Erbil Civilization Museum, and the Duhok National Museum.
