From Psyche to psyche.The interiorisation of Apuleius’ fabella in D’Annunzio, Pascoli, and Savinio

The article aims at examining three pivotal episodes regarding the reception of Cupid and Psyche in Italian literature from the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century: the Pre-Raphaelite Psyche of Gabriele d'Annunzio, the Symbolist Psyche of Giovanni Pascoli, and finally, the disgraced and ironic Psyches of Alberto Savinio. In their diversity, these texts firstly document the spread, in Italy too, of a particularly pervasive myth in European late-romanticism and decadentism; then, they trace a path of interiorisation, in the reception of the Apuleian tale, that culminates in allegory (particularly in Savinio) and highlights the influence on writers (especially on Pascoli and Savinio) of contemporary philosophical and psychoanalytic theories.

L'articolo fa riferimento a tre episodi chiave che esemplificano la ricezione della favola di Amore e Psiche in Italia tra fine Ottocento e inizio Novecento: la Psiche preraffaelita di d'Annunzio, la Psiche simbolista di Pascoli e, infine, la Psiche ironica di Alberto Savinio. Nella loro diversità questi testi documentano la diffusione in Italia di un mito particolarmente pervasivo nel tardo romanticismo e nel decadentismo europeo; si evidenzia inoltre, in queste forme di ricezione, un percorso verso l'interiorizzazione che culmina nell'allegoria (soprattutto in Savinio) e evidenzia l'influenza (specialmente in Pascoli e in Savinio) delle teorie filosofiche e psicoanalitiche del tempo.
