Gli Atlanti storici delle città europee. Alcune riflessioni a distanza di mezzo secolo

This article deals with the European Historic Towns Atlas project, one of the core activities of the International Commission for the History of Towns (ICHT), which studies European cities and towns with a comparative method, using historical maps as sources. Fifty years after the publication in print of the first of over half a thousand atlases, the evolution of which is briefly illustrated here with a focus on the atlases of northern Italy, they are in a phase of transition to digital technology which, by exploiting the potential of information technologies, will offer greater opportunities for comparison as well as dissemination.

Questo articolo riguarda gli Atlanti storici delle città europee, una delle attività cardine della International Commission for the History of Towns (ICHT), che studia le città europee con metodo comparativo, utilizzando le mappe storiche come fonti. A 50 anni dalla pubblicazione a stampa del primo di oltre mezzo migliaio di atlanti, dei quali qui si illustra brevemente l’evoluzione – con un focus su quelli dell’Italia settentrionale –, essi sono in una fase di transizione verso il digitale che, sfruttando le potenzialità delle tecnologie informatiche, offrirà maggiori opportunità di comparazione e divulgazione.
