This book traces the history of an Ottoman Jewish family's property in Galata, Istanbul that was built in 1892-1893. It engages with the history of Pera and Galata, Ottoman modernization, ethnic communities in the empire, architecture and property relations in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century. The history of the Barnathan Apartments offers a unique perspective to understand the changes in the ethnic composition of Galata. The study employs annual commerce reports, insurance maps, land registers, archival sources, interviews, and testimonies of the Barnathan family members who are now living in different parts of the world.
