The Heavy Liquid Metal (HLM) deeply affects the behaviour of the steels with which it comes in contact, not just in terms of corrosion, but also in terms of Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME). This phenomenon, still nowadays not fully understood, is known to be deeply affected by microstructure, surface conditions, temperature and strain rate. Even if the occurrence of LME is mainly related to a range of low temperatures (the so called “ductility through” ), some literature references also report detrimental effects of the HLM contact on creep resistance.
