This chapter focuses on the use of learning techniques in fingerprint recognition. After a short introduction of the basic concepts and notation, a detailed review of the existing literature is provided by discussing the most salient learning based approaches applied to feature extraction, matching and classification. Although in fingerprint recognition the use of learning techniques is not central such as for other biometric modalities (e.g. face recognition), this chapter points out some of its advantages and potentialities and draws some promising research directions for the future.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the use of learning techniques in fingerprint recognition. After a short introduction of the basic concepts and notation, a detailed review of the existing literature is provided by discussing the most salient learning based approaches applied to feature extraction, matching and classification. Although in fingerprint recognition the use of learning techniques is not central such as for other biometric modalities (e.g. face recognition), this chapter points out some of its advantages and potentialities and draws some promising research directions for the future.
