The development of personality is a dynamic, lifelong, process, which results from the continuous interactions among biological, genetic, and environmental factors across time. Over the same developmental period, people demonstrate differences in the direction of personality development and in the extent to which the changes occur. Although little is currently known about how early‐emerging individual differences become elaborated into personality, the literature suggests that overall the process of personality development has enough structure and direction, and it shows change and continuity across all phases of life, from childhood, through adolescence and adulthood, to old age.

Abstract

The development of personality is a dynamic, lifelong, process, which results from the continuous interactions among biological, genetic, and environmental factors across time. Over the same developmental period, people demonstrate differences in the direction of personality development and in the extent to which the changes occur. Although little is currently known about how early‐emerging individual differences become elaborated into personality, the literature suggests that overall the process of personality development has enough structure and direction, and it shows change and continuity across all phases of life, from childhood, through adolescence and adulthood, to old age.
