The intention of this book is to show the importance of the work of Georg Simmel (1858-1918) by crossing different disciplines (philosophy, sociology, anthropology, theory of architecture and the city) around the question of the existence of an "architectural field" in his thinking. The book reconstructs a set of themes concerning the big city, the buildings, places and objects that populate our environment and that shape the world we inhabit and the social and cultural life that takes shape in it. It is matter of questioning problems about landscape, urban culture, spatial organisation, the question of borders, boundaries, aesthetic experience, and even the role of the place of the 'foreigner in the city'.
