Religious freedom in the Balkan area between the difficult legacy of the Iron Curtain and the new complex dynamics of integration in the EU landscape.

The current structure of relations between the State and religious denominations in Eastern European countries presents character- istics of relative uniformity that derive, on the one hand, from the common matrix of Soviet approach from which derives the regu- lation of the religious phenomenon; on the other hand, after 1989, from the intervention of the European Union, which, in the attempt to build a united Europe, plays a fundamental role in the balance be- tween local identity and European identity, often not fully grasping and not enhancing the peculiarities that characterize the different territories.

Il contributo ripercorre le relazioni tra Stati dell'Est Europa e confessioni religiose dal periodo sovietico, passando per l'ostpolitik sino ai giorni nostri. Di ogni Stato (paesi dell'ex Jugoslavia; Romania, Moldavia, Bulgaria,Macedonia, Albania, Repubblica Ceca, Ucraina, Bielorussia, Repubbliche baltiche, Polonia, Ungheria) è è esaminata la legislazione in materia di libertà religiosa e sono messe in luce le maggiori problematiche rispetto al processo di integrazione dell'Unione Europea.
