The journal Biomaterials continues to improve in both quality and efficiency. It is now clearly established as the leading journal in this field, with an Impact Factor, as announced in June 2009, of 6.646 and a rejection rate of around 75%. At the same time, we are witnessing a significant change to the understanding of biomaterials science, which has consequences for the scope of the journal. I have recently written a Leading Opinion Paper in the journal (‘On the Nature of Biomaterials’, Vol 30, p5897-5909) which gives a personal view of the manner in which biomaterials is changing, and readers and author are referred to this for an appreciation of our scope. Coordination of the review process is undertaken by Peggy O’Donnell and all decisions on each paper, including allocation of referees and final decisions on acceptance, rejection and revision are made by myself. We look forward to continued collaboration with all of our authors and referees as we strive to introduce new initiatives and improve further the quality of the journal.
