This is a preface to an important book dedicated to a discussion of the role of images in the mediation of so-called "migration crises". I discuss therefore the notion of migration crisis, with references to the "long summer fo migration" in 2015 and to current developments, in particular in the Mediterranean and along the "Balkan route". The general point is to emphasize the political dimension of movements and struggles of migration, which is often neutralized by humanitarian discourses and related iconographies.
