History for an anthropologist is not so much the passive acceptance of what has been written about the past, primarily concerned with understanding how the history of the subject of enquiry might influence one’s current analysis. It is a process of mutual exchange rather than a matter of one serving the other. My study on the relationship between Italians and Chinese in fashion has inevitably meant revising some of the assumptions on the history and meanings of Made in Italy.
