This paper provides an overview of the analyses proposed within the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar and its Lexical Mapping Theory for e-marked argument alternations in Serbian, in particular for reflexive (bi e ‘dress’) and reciprocal (ei e ‘love each other’) formation. We single out as most explanatory the intransitive analysis that assumes reflexive and reciprocal formation to involve detransitivisation of the predicate, but with both arguments kept in the a-structure and jointly mapped onto the subject function. In support of this analysis, we look at the close relationship between inherent reflexives and unmarked unaccusatives on the one hand, and inherent reciprocals and unmarked unergatives on the other. We also establish that the alternations that lead to reflexive and reciprocal formation are predominantly morphosyntactic in nature, i.e. they operate by preserving the thematic layer while bringing about changes in the mapping between a-structure valence slots and syntactic functions. Lastly, we look at the autocausative forms (eii e ‘move’; jediii e ‘unite’), for which we propose a morphosemantic analysis.
